[Scots] Jenkins announces Lyon spring AD honor roll

BATESVILLE, Ark. – Lyon College Director of Athletics Kevin Jenkins has announced his AD Honor Roll for the spring semester on Wednesday, with six athletes reporting grade point averages of 4.0, while 52 athletes posted averages of 3.0 or better.

Of the 33.1 percent of the Lyon student-athletes being members of the honor roll, 32 of them were female athletes, while 26 were males.

BATESVILLE, Ark. – Parents looking for athletic sports camps to keep their children busy and to help them fine-tune their skills for next season can find just about something for every interest at Lyon College this summer.

The Scots athletic teams will be hosting boys and girls basketball, boys and girls soccer, volleyball and baseball camps at various times and for various age groups on the Batesville campus. All camps will take place on the Lyon College campus.

Due to the late hiring of new softball coach Travis Owen, the Lyon College softball camps have been put on hold until further notice.

BATESVILLE, Ark. – Eight Lyon College athletes have been named to the spring 2013 Lyon College Dean's List. For the College as a whole, 72 students were honored for their hard work in the spring semester.

To be on the Dean's List, a student must maintain a 3.75 grade point average or higher while taking a minimum of 12 hours a semester.

Earning the elite status from 2012-13 Lyon squads includes three from women's soccer, two from volleyball, and one each from men's soccer, women's golf and baseball.

BATESVILLE, Ark. – In what is probably the most successful school year in the history of Lyon College athletics, including three teams being ranked in the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) Top 25, the 170 Scot athletes and friends of the department were honored Wednesday night at the 2012-13 Lyon College Athletics Banquet held in the Edwards Commons.

Scot women's basketball player Phagen Altom, an Honorable Mention All-American twice in her collegiate career, was presented with the Winnie Marable Award, signifying the outstanding female athlete at the College. Men's basketball player Slater Belew, who broke the Lyon career record with 99 blocked shots, was presented with the Dick Winningham Award, given to the outstanding male athlete each year.

Our teams have performed very well in the American Midwest Conference and our women's basketball team is preparing for its second consecutive trip to the NAIA Division I National Tournament in Frankfort, Ky. The women's basketball team finished its inaugural season in the AMC as regular season co-champions. Our spring sports seasons are underway and we are looking forward to many exciting days of softball, baseball, and golf.

A review of our past alumni support has shown a strong commitment to the Scots athletic programs. [Scots] Yellow Jackets stay unbeaten, secure Lyon College tourney title

BATESVILLE, Ark. - The Mountain View Yellow Jackets had trouble controlling Concord's Jacob Roark, just like every other team in the boys' bracket of the Lyon College High School Invitational Basketball Tournament. But despite Roark's 28 points in the finale, Mountain View stayed unbeaten on the year at 10-0 and took the championship Saturday night in James C. Becknell Gymnasium with a 64-52 victory.

Mountain View junior Tanner Holt was named the Most Valuable Player of the six-day affair, while teammate Tyler Luster was named to the all-tournament squad. Also earning accolades on the all-tourney team were Concord's Roark and Hanse Bowman, along with Locke Adair of Harding Academy and Spencer Reaves of Cedar Ridge.

BATESVILLE, Ark. - Lyon College High School Basketball Invitational Most Valuable Player Haley Hix scored 10 points in the second half and led all scorers with 16 points Saturday night as the junior helped Cedar Ridge to the girls' tournament championship with a 43-36 win over Cave City in James C. Becknell Gymnasium.

The Lady Timberwolves knocked off Concord, 50-25, along with Mountain View, 41-34, and Pocahontas, 59-48, to earn the right to play for the title. Cave City knocked off Greers Ferry West Side, 52-35, along with Heber Springs, 51-36, and Southside, 49-36, to earn the opportunity to play for the championship.

BATESVILLE, Ark. - And then there were four.

The 30-team Lyon College High School Invitational Basketball Tournament has been whittled down to two boys' teams and a pair of girls' teams after some wild action Friday night in James C. Becknell Gymnasium. Concord and Mountain View high schools are now set to play for the boys' championships on Saturday, while Cedar Ridge and Cave City will square off for the girls' title.

In boys' semifinal action on Friday, Concord slipped past Cedar Ridge, 64-62, while Mountain View built a big lead in the third quarter and then hung on to clip Harding Academy, 62-57. The Timberwolves and Yellow Jackets will now play Saturday night at 7:15 p.m.

[Scots] Lady Southerners lead teams into Lyon College tourney semis

BATESVILLE, Ark. - The Mountain View (45-41) and Harding Academy (54-52, OT) boys basketball teams survived strong competition from Calico Rock and Greers Ferry West Side, respectively, to advance to the semifinal around of the Lyon College High School Invitational Basketball Tournament on Thursday. MVHS and HAHS were joined by the Cedar Ridge boys and the Southside and Pocahontas girls, as they all advanced to the semifinals.

The semifinals are set for Friday in James C. Becknell Gymnasium. Cedar Ridge will face Pocahontas (4:30 p.m.) and Cave City will tangle with Southside (7 p.m.) in the girls' semifinals, while Concord and Cedar Ridge (5:45 p.m.) will square off and Harding Academy and Mountain View (8:15 p.m.) are scheduled to play in the boys' semifinals.

The championships are scheduled for Saturday at 6 p.m. (girls) and 7:15 p.m. (boys).

BATESVILLE, Ark. - The field of the Lyon College High School Invitational Basketball Tournament has been trimmed to 13 teams after Wednesday's third day of action in James C. Becknell Gymnasium. The Concord boys' team, along with the girls squads from Cave City and Cedar Ridge have already clinched spots in the semifinal round on Friday.

Five more quarterfinal contests will be played on Thursday, beginning at 3:30 p.m., with the semifinals set for Friday at 4:30 p.m. and the finals Saturday at 6 p.m.

BATESVILLE, Ark. - The Lyon College High School Invitational Basketball Tournament finished with a bang Monday night as five more teams advanced in the single-elimination Tournament. The Viola, Mountain View and Greers Ferry West Side boys teams all picked up wins, while the Cedar Ridge and Pocahontas girls squads won as well.

Here's a rundown of Monday's first-round action:

BOYS: VIOLA 57, SOUTHSIDE 37 - GAME PHOTO GALLERY

Viola senior Austin Gardner led all scorers with 28 points to lead the Longhorns to a first-round victory over the Southside Southerners, 57-37, in a first-round boys game at the Lyon College tournament.

Quentin Houghtaling complemented Gardner's scoring output by chipping in 14 points, while Devin Brown added five, Chris Shaffer dropped in four and Jeff Smith and Brandyn Batterton each scored one point.

BATESVILLE, Ark. - Both Cave City High School basketball teams captured wins on Saturday on the first day of the 30-team Lyon College High School Invitational Basketball Tournament at James C. Becknell Gymnasium. The Cavemen topped Heber Springs, 62-37, while the Cavewomen knocked off Greers Ferry West Side, 52-35.

In other first-round games, The Melbourne girls team blasted Calico Rock, 48-21, The Calico Rock boys captured a 55-51 win over Melbourne in the single-elimination tournament. Also, the Heber Springs girls defeated Highland, 52-14, the Salem girls knocked off Mammoth Spring, 46-37, and the Harding Academy boys stopped Mammoth Spring, 52-50, in a thriller. The Concord boys and Mountain View girls had first-round byes.

The tournament will continue Monday, with five first-round games scheduled. There will also be two first-round games on Wednesday, along with three quarterback matchups. After five more quarterfinal games on Thursday, the semifinals will take place on Friday, with the championship games taking place next Saturday.

BATESVILLE, Ark. - With December approaching, that means basketball is in the air. Some of the best high school basketball in this region of Arkansas will take place in Lyon College's James C. Becknell Gymnasium starting this Saturday as the 2012 Lyon College High School Basketball Tournament gets underway.

Thirty-one teams from 16 high schools will participate in the six-day single-elimination event, which has run annually since 1982 and includes 29 games this year. The boys and girls semifinals are set for Friday, Dec. 7, with the championship matchups being played on Saturday, Dec. 8.

BATESVILLE, Ark. - Five new members were inducted into the Lyon College Athletics Hall of Fame Saturday night. David Brogdon (Class of '93) joined his father, Ronnie Brogden ('70), who was inducted in 1991, to become the first father-son duo invited in. He joined Linda Ramsey Austin ('86), Ted Box ('71), Brian Krug ('98) and John Bennett as the Class of 2012.

The inductees bring the total number of Hall of Famer members at Lyon College to 114.

BATESVILLE, Ark. - Lyon College officials have announced the selection of five members of the Athletics Hall of Fame Class of 2012. Making up this year's honorees include Service Award winner John Bennett, along with Arkansas College/Lyon graduates David Brogdon (1993), Ted Box (1971), Brian Krug (1998) and Linda Ramsey Austin (1986).

This will bring the total number of Lyon Hall of Fame inductees to 112.

The Lyon College Hall of Fame induction banquet will be held on Saturday, Nov. 17, and will culminate a day full of activities on the Lyon campus. There will be a women/men's basketball doubleheader beginning at 12:30 p.m. in the James C. Becknell Gymnasium against Philander Smith College. The Hall of Fame reception will be held in the Edwards Commons at 5:30 p.m., with the banquet to follow at 6:30 p.m.

There will also be a silent auction held throughout the evening's celebration in the Eds.
