BATESVILLE, Ark. – The Lyon College softball team struggled in the hitting department in the first two games of the Lyon College Invitational softball Tournament on Saturday, producing just five hits as the Scots fell to Evangel University, 15-3, and 22nd-ranked William Penn, 7-0.
In other games played in Saturday's opening round, Evangel topped William Penn, 5-2, and Evangel rolled past University of the Ozarks, 16-1, as the Crusaders finished the tournament with a 3-0 record.

The Scots were limited to just five hits, while Evangel was able to take advantage of five Lyon miscues and grab a 15-3 victory on Saturday.
Valerie Howell, Lyon's top hitter on the season with a .481 batting average, was a perfect 3-for-3 at the plate, recording her third homer of the season. She drove in two runs and scored one herself.
Lauren Mills was also 1-for-2, scoring a run, while Stephanie Haft tagged her second home run of the year, with a solo shot in the fifth inning.
Jessica Cagigas (1-3) took the loss in the circle for Lyon College. She started the game and pitched 1.2 innings, surrendering seven runs (only 1 earned) on five hits, with a strikeout and a walk. Mills pitched the final 3.1 frames, giving up eight runs on 10 hits.

William Penn pitcher Jennifer Whitehead threw her second no-hitter of her career against Lyon in the final game of the day as she struck out 15 and walked four in the 7-0 win for the Statesmen.
Kate Tyree (0-2) was the losing hurler for the Scots. She pitched the entire seven frames, giving up seven runs (all earned) on 15 hits, with four walks and a strikeout.
