BATESVILLE, Ark. - After helping her team post a 1-0-1 record at the Lyon College Soccer Tournament this weekend, Scots women soccer goalkeeper Stephanie Spiteri has been named the Lyon College Featured Athlete of the Week for contests played during Aug. 27-Sept. 2. This is a weekly honor presented to an outstanding Lyon athlete throughout the year and is based on leadership, as well as statistical production.

Spiteri, a 5-7 sophomore who is majoring in Mathematics at Lyon, was coming off the prior week when she faced No.7-ranked Martin Methodist and gave up five goals in a 5-1 setback to open the season. But this week was a different story as she worked with her defensive squad and allowed just two goals, while facing 12 shots on goal during her 200 minutes of work.

She allowed just two goals and recorded seven saves in a double-overtime 2-2 tie against Oklahoma Wesleyan University (3-0-1) on Friday. On Sunday she picked up her first shutout of the season, while recording five saves in a 2-0 Scots win over NCAA Division I University of Arkansas-Pine Bluff in Lyon's official home opener.

Spiteri anchored the Lyon College defense a year ago, starting all 17 matches in 2011. She worked 1,630 minutes, surrendering only 1.44 goals per match. She finished with 75 saves as the Scots posted a 10-9 mark.

She is from Hayward, Calif., attending Mt. Eden High School. While in high school she was a two-sport athlete, participating in soccer and softball. She was a First-Team All-League HAAL player in soccer and a captain of her high school team for two years. She also served as captain of her club team for five years.

Spiteri is the daughter of John and Silvia Spiteri of Hayward, California.
