PHOENIX, Ariz. – The Lyon College football team took a 3-0 lead over No. 18 Arizona Christian University after the first quarter, but the Firestorm outscored the Scots, 56-14, the rest of the game and defeated the Scots, 56-17 on Saturday night at Shadow Mountain High School.
Lyon fell to 2-5 and 0-4 in the CSFL following the loss, while Arizona Christian improved to 5-1 overall and 3-1 in the CSFL.
After both teams were held scoreless for much of the first quarter, Ignacio Gomez (FR/Wilmer, Texas) gave the Scots a 3-0 lead on a 41-yard field goal.
Arizona Christian quickly took a 7-3 lead to open up the second quarter as the Firestorm intercepted a Lyon College pass and returned it 17 yards for a pick-six.
The Firestorm forced the Scots into a three-and-out on their next possession and produced another scoring drive. Arizona Christian's quarterback Ryan Esslinger completed 4-of-6 passes to put the Firestorm inside the red zone. Esslinger picked up the final 14 yards on a scamper and extended the Firestorm's lead to 14-3.
The Scots found themselves with great field position on the ensuing kickoff as Jacquez Parker (FR/Fort Lauderdale, Fla.) returned the kick 75 yards down to the ACU 25. Titus Nelson (FR/Zachary, La.) took control of the drive as the freshman ran the ball seven times, with the final attempt producing a touchdown from one yard out and cut the deficit to 14-10.
The seesaw battle continued in the second quarter as the Firestorm answered right back on their next possession. Esslinger opened up the drive completing five straight passes before finally throwing an incomplete pass. The Firestorm kept with their signal-caller as Esslinger rushed for eight yards before completing a seven-yard pass to Johnathan Parks. Damario Fair picked up the final 15 yards on a pair of rushing attempts and gave the Firestorm a 21-10 advantage heading into the break.
Arizona Christian extended its lead to 42-10 after outscoring the Scots, 21-0, in the third quarter.
The Firestorm added two more touchdowns before the Scots scored the final points of the game. Fabian Buenrostro (SR/Tulare, Calif.) opened up the drive with three straight rushing attempts that totaled 11 yards in all before Josh Abel (FR/Jensen Beach, Fla.) ran for four yards. Buenrostro and Abel continued to split the carries to drive the Scots down the field. Nelson got into the mix on the ground game and picked up four yards to put the Scots on the ACU 10-yard line. Cody Jones (SR/Russellville, Ark.) connected with Parker for a 10-yard touchdown pass right before the final whistle.
- Nelson once again led the Scots in rushing as the freshman picked up 113 yards on 26 attempts with one touchdown.
- JoJo Peters (FR/Allen, Texas) led the Scots defensively with nine total tackles.
- Esslinger completed 27-of-36 passes for 267 yards and three touchdowns for the Firestorm.
WHAT'S AHEAD FOR THE SCOTS
The Lyon College football team will return to action on Oct. 21, at Pioneer Stadium against Texas Wesleyan University. The Oct. 21, game will serve as the 'Homecoming Game' as well as the 'Pink Out Game' for the Scots.
