BATESVILLE, Ark. – The 10th-ranked Lyon College women's basketball held No. 23 Lindenwood-Belleville to 1-for-11 from the field in the fourth quarter, to run away with their 20th conference win of the season, 74-58 inside James C. Becknell Gymnasium Thursday night. The Scots also had four players score in double-figures to help Lyon use the late run down the stretch.
Elliot Taylor (SR/Cabot, Ark.) (pictured below right) scored a season high 17 points, while Sarah Elkins (SO/Greenwood, Ark.) had 15 points. Kiara Moore (SR/Little Rock, Ark.) and Madison Riley (FR/Judsonia, Ark.) each had 14 points.
Lindenwood-Belleville was led by Brianna Mueller's and Heather Waldemar's 14 points.
Lyon improves to 24-4 overall and 20-3 in the AMC, while Lindenwood-Belleville falls to 21-8 and 17-6 in the conference on the season. The Scots have already clinched the No. 2 overall seed in the AMC Tournament, while the Lady Lynx are still in the fourth spot in the AMC. In other AMC action, No. 1 Freed-Hardeman defeated St. Louis College of Pharmacy 96-33 to stay undefeated on the year. No. 12 Columbia was victorious over Park, 86-53. The Cougars sit in third place in the conference.
BY THE NUMBERS
27 – Lyon grabbed 27 total rebounds in the game, led by six apiece from Taylor and Elkins. Moore followed with four, while Riley had three.
46.8 – Lyon had a strong outing on the floor, going 29-of-62 for 46.8 percent. Taylor and Elkins each made seven field goals and Riley finished with six made shots.
21 – The Scots' defense came up big down the stretch, forcing six turnovers in the final period. Overall, the Lady Lynx turned it over 21 times, while Lyon had just eight mistakes.
5 – Lindenwood-Belleville was only able to score five points in the final quarter, as Lyon's defense locked down and held LUB to just nine percent from the field.
Lyon jumped out to a 12-6 lead in the first quarter, but the margin was quickly cut down to 19-17 at the buzzer of the first period. The Lady Lynx kept the second quarter close, but the Scots would take a 38-31 lead with just over a minute left, before going into the locker room up 42-33.
Lyon would take a 52-39 lead with 6:38 left in the third quarter, but LUB hung close going on a 14-6 run to end the quarter with Lyon leading 58-53. Lyon then led 60-57 in the first minute of the final period, before stifling LUB from the field to outscore them in the quarter 16-5. Taylor, Moore, Riley and Elkins would combine for the final 14 points of the game for the Scots.
WHAT'S AHEAD FOR THE SCOTS
Lyon hosts Harris-Stowe on Saturday for their annual 'Senior Day' at 1 p.m. inside the 'Beck.' The Scots will then host an AMC Tournament quarterfinal game on March 1 against Missouri Baptist, who defeated Williams Baptist 61-55 tonight to clinch the No. 7 seed. Tip-off is still to be determined.
