HENDERSON, Tenn. – It was a battle between the conference's top two teams Tuesday night in the American Midwest Conference Game of the Week. Freed-Hardeman came into the night ranked first in the conference in field goal percentage defense, allowing just 31.0 percent. Lyon on the other hand, came in shooting 45.5 percent on the season, which was also ranked first in the AMC. The 10th-ranked Lyon College women's basketball team battled with the Lions all night, finding themselves within striking distance late in the game, trailing 55-47. In the end, the Scots eventually fell to No. 1 Freed-Hardeman 73-62 on the Smith-Kirk Court Tuesday night.
Kiara Moore (SR/Little Rock, Ark.) (pictured right) had another 20-point game - her third in four contests, scoring 28 points for the Scots, one point shy of her season high. Sarah Elkins (SO/Greenwood, Ark.) chipped in 13 and Elliot Taylor (SR/Cabot, Ark.) (pictured below) added eight points.
Freed-Hardeman was led by Gabrielle Nicholson's 23 points, while Kim Mallory had 16 and Taleeah Cross added 12.
Lyon is now 21-4 overall and 17-3 in the AMC, while Freed-Hardeman moves to 26-0 overall and 20-0 in the conference. With four regular season games left for the Scots, they currently sit one game ahead of No. 12 Columbia for second place, as the Cougars are 22-4 overall and 16-4 in the conference. The Lions sit in first place in the AMC. In other AMC action, No. 23 Lindenwood-Belleville defeated William Woods 72-69 to hold onto the fourth spot in the AMC, with a 14-5 conference record. The Owls sit in fifth place with a 14-6 mark. Harris-Stowe defeated St. Louis Pharmacy 75-45 and is in fifth place at 13-7.
BY THE NUMBERS
33.9 – Lyon shot 33.9 percent in the game on 21-of-62 from the floor. The Scots shot 12-of-31 in the second half for 38.7 percent, and were led by Moore's eight made field goals. Taylor and Elkins each made four field goals in the game. Freed-Hardeman finished the game shooting 26-of-57 for 45.6 percent.
25 – Lyon grabbed 25 rebounds on the night, led by seven apiece from Moore and Taylor. Elkins followed with four rebounds, while Liz Henderson (FR/Newark, Ark.) added three.
82.4 – Lyon made 14-of-17 from the free throw line for 82.4 percent, as Moore went 9-for-11 and Elkins made 5-of-6.
13 – The Scots forced 13 Lion turnovers on the night, while scoring 15 points off FHU's mistakes. Lyon also had 13 assists in the game, led by three from Moore and Madison Riley (FR/Judsonia, Ark.). Elkins, Henderson and Gracen Ratliff (FR/Batesville, Ark.) added two, while Ali Tucker (SO/Jonesboro, Ark.) had one.
The first quarter was neck-and-neck as both teams traded baskets. Freed-Hardeman led 13-9 with just under four minutes left in the first period, but the Scots went on an 11-6 run capped off by a three-point basket by Tucker to end the quarter. Freed-Hardeman then outscored Lyon 14-6 in the second quarter, and would take a slim 33-26 advantage into the locker room.
The Scots chipped away at the lead in the third quarter as Moore, Elkins and Taylor helped Lyon get within two points at 41-39 with 5:35 to play in the period. The Lions then went on an 11-0 run to close out the third quarter and take a 52-39 lead.
Lyon would get within reach again in the fourth quarter, trailing by eight points at 57-49 at the 6:25 mark. Freed-Hardeman however, was able to fend off the Scots in the end.
WHAT'S AHEAD FOR THE SCOTS
Lyon travels to Hannibal-LaGrange on Thursday to play the Trojans at 5:30 p.m., followed by a makeup game from Dec. 17 with St. Louis Pharmacy on Friday at 6 p.m. The Scots then return home for their final two regular season contests, starting with Lindenwood-Belleville on Feb. 23 and Harris-Stowe on Feb. 25 for 'Senior Day.'
