WALNUT RIDGE, Ark. – The ninth-ranked Lyon College women's basketball team found themselves down late in the second half, but the Scots used an 11-0 run trailing 67-59 with 5:55 left to grab a late lead and defeat Williams Baptist, 78-73 on the road Saturday afternoon. The Scots led 72-69 with just over a minute left and played strong defense while scoring six of the final 10 points.
Kiara Moore (SR/Little Rock, Ark.) had another tremendous outing scoring a season high 29 points on 10-of-22 from the floor, while Liz Henderson (FR/Newark, Ark.) pitched in 16 and Sarah Elkins (SO/Greenwood, Ark.) (pictured below) added 11.
Williams Baptist was led by Alytrius Perry's 23 points, with Andrea Moffitt chipping in 13.
Lyon improves to 21-3 overall record and 17-2 in the American Midwest Conference, ahead of their big battle with No. 1 Freed-Hardeman on Tuesday. The Scots sit two games behind the Lions for first place, while Williams Baptist falls to 10-15 overall and 7-12 in the AMC. The Eagles currently hold onto the eighth and final playoff spot. In other AMC action, Freed-Hardeman defeated Central Baptist 94-40 to remain undefeated, while No. 13 Columbia was victorious over Missouri Baptist, 110-58.
William Woods defeated Park 74-56 and is in fourth place, while No. 12 Lindenwood-Belleville sits in fifth place after coming out on top with a 90-45 win over Hannibal-LaGrange.
BY THE NUMBERS
43.1 – Lyon shot 43.1 percent in the game on 25-of-58 shooting. Moore had a team high 10 field goals made and Elkins had five. The Scots improved in the second half by shooting 13-of-25 for 52.0 percent, after shooting 36.4 percent in the first.
30 – Lyon grabbed 30 total rebounds in the game, led by a career high nine from Gracen Ratliff (FR/Batesville, Ark.). Moore added seven, while Elkins and Madison Riley (FR/Judsonia, Ark.) each had three.
28 – The Scots finished strong at the free throw line as they took 28 total attempts in the game. Lyon made 22-fo-28 overall for 78.6 percent, led by 8-of-9 for Henderson and a perfect 6-for-6 by Moore.
6 – There was a total of six lead changes in the game, with the Scots making an extensive run down the stretch to finally pull ahead. Each team had three leads in the game, with the Eagles largest lead being 10 points and the Scots' biggest margin at seven.
19 – The Scots forced 19 turnovers in the game by the Eagles, after forcing seven WBC mistakes in the third quarter. Lyon was able to also score 26 points off the Eagles' turnovers.
Lyon and Williams Baptist competed throughout, as the Eagles were hot for most of the game, shooting 51.9 percent in the first half. The Scots held a 21-17 lead with 2:08 left in the first quarter, but WBC went on a 6-0 run to take a 23-21 after the first period. Both teams would trade baskets throughout the second quarter before Williams Baptist made a late run in the final two minutes to take a 38-32 halftime lead.
The third quarter is when the Scots managed to chip away at the lead, as the third period has been one of the stronger periods for the team this year. The Scots shot 7-of-11 in the third quarter, including narrowing a 10-point deficit with eight minutes left, at 47-37. Elkins Riley and Moore scored eight straight points for the Scots to come within two at 47-45, before the Eagles extended it momentarily to 58-51 with 2:09 left in the third quarter. The Scots would trail by just five points, at 60-55 heading to the final act.
In the fourth quarter, Moore scored seven of the team's first nine points to pull within three points at 67-64, which would ignite the Scots' large run. Elliot Taylor (SR/Cabot, Ark.) gave Lyon the lead at 68-67 with 2:38 to play, before Moore and Ratliff scored baskets to preserve the Scots lead. Lyon led 73-69 with 16 seconds remaining before closing the game out with free throws in the end.
WHAT'S AHEAD FOR THE SCOTS
Lyon travels to Freed-Hardeman on Tuesday for a 5:30 p.m. tipoff. The Scots then go to Hannibal-LaGrange on Thursday to play the Trojans at 5:30 p.m.
