WALNUT RIDGE, Ark. – A trio of Lyon College wrestlers were named to the All-American Midwest Conference Wrestling team of 12 student-athletes, the conference office announced Saturday. Scot senior Troy Mercer (SR/Rockwall, Texas), along with juniors Dustin Miller (JR/Escondido, Calif.) and Connor Webber (JR/Houston, Texas) all earned elite status in the AMC.
No. 9-ranked Williams Baptist College had the most recipients on the all-conference squad with six representatives, followed by Lyon with three, Lindenwood University-Belleville with a pair and Missouri Baptist University with one representative. LU-B and Lyon were both receiving votes in the latest NAIA Top 20 poll.
Mercer, who wrestled in the 197-lb. weight class this season, entered the AMC Tournament with a 34-11 season record, including 19 pins, one technical fall victory and three major decisions. He was named the AMC Wrestler of the Week during the season.
Webber, ranked 14th in the latest national poll, competed in the 165-lb. weight class, entered the league tourney with a 35-21 record, including 20 pins, one technical fall win and six major decisions. He earned AMC Wrestler of the Week twice this season.
Webber was also named to the All-AMC Champions of Character team, which is made up of one representative of each institution who best represents the NAIA Champions of Character Initiative.
Miller, who missed the conference tourney with a concussion, battled in the 125-lb. weight class this season. He posted a 25-13 record this season, with 11 pins, a pair of technical fall victories and five major decisions.
Tyler Fraley of Williams Baptist College was named the AMC Wrestler of the Year, while his teammate, Demetrius Thomas, earned Freshman of the Year Honors, and WBC head coach Kerry Regner was named the Coach of the Year. For Lindenwood-Belleville, Marcelo Sierra earned AMC Newcomer of the Year honors.
Fraley, a 141-pound junior from Freehold, N.J., is the NAIA's top-ranked wrestler in the 141-pound weight class. He has a record of 29-3 on the season entering the AMC Championship, with 15 wins by fall, six by technical fall, and two by major decision. He also earned the NAIA's National Wrestler of the Week award for the week ending on January 22.
Thomas, a heavyweight from Ferguson, Mo., earned the Freshman of the year award after an outstanding first season in Walnut Ridge. Thomas posted a 24-4 record on the year, with eight pins, a technical fall win, and seven major decision. Thomas entered the AMC Championship ranked as the #8 heavyweight in the NAIA.
Regner has quickly built the Eagles into an NAIA power. The 2017 season is just the third season in WBC wrestling history, and he led the Eagles to a ranking as high as No. 3 in the NAIA this season. Currently ranked No. 9 in the top-20 Coaches' Poll, Regner's Eagles claimed eight of the 10 top-seeds in the AMC Championship.
Sierra, a 141-pound sophomore transfer from Miami, Fla., entered the AMC Championship as the 9th-ranked wrestler in the NAIA in his weight class. He boasts a record of 22-9 on the season, with 10 wins by fall, seven by technical fall, and one major decision.
Lyon had one athlete named to the All-Academic American Midwest Conference squad. Freshman Roger Gasmann (FR/Little Elm, Texas) (pictured above) posted a 4.0 grade point average in the fall and earned his way on to the squad.
