WALNUT RIDGE, Ark. – With three of the six squads competing either ranked or receiving votes for the NAIA Wrestling Coaches' Men's Top 20 Poll, the second American Midwest Conference Wrestling Championships are set to get underway Saturday at 9 a.m. in Williams Baptist College's Southerland-Mabee Center.
The event, which includes wrestlers from Lyon College, Central Baptist College (Ark.), Hannibal-LaGrange University (Mo.), Lindenwood University-Belleville (Ill.), Missouri Baptist University (Mo.), as well as WBC, features 11 wrestlers who are ranked in the Top 16 nationally in their respective weight classifications. As a team, the Eagles enter the competition ranked No. 9 nationally, while LU-B and Lyon are both receiving votes for the Top 20.
Admission to the one-day event is $8 for adults and $5 for students/children.
Williams Baptist College, the defending conference champion, is the favorite coming into Saturday's event. The Eagles were ranked as high as third in the nation this season and are currently tied in the national rankings, tied with Southern Oregon.
WBC has eight wrestlers who are ranked in their respective weight classes, while Lindenwood-Belleville has two wrestlers ranked and Lyon has one.
The Eagles' Tyler Fraley is ranked No. 1 in the 141-lb. weight class, while the Lynx's Marcelo Sierra currently sits at No. 9.
William Baptist's Demetrius Thomas is currently ranked 8th in the heavyweight class, while teammate Zach Revier is ranked in the same spot in the 157-lb. class.
Other WBC wrestlers coming into the tournament ranked include Tanner Irwin (14th) in the 133-lb. class; Patrick Grigsby (15th) in the 149-lb. class; Jeffrey Haley (11th) and Keion McVay (13th) in the 174-lb. class; and Josh Chiles (13th) in the 184-lb. class.
Lindenwood-Belleville's Darius Lewis is currently ranked 13th in the 197-lb. weight class and Lyon's Connor Webber (JR/Houston, Texas) (pictured above) is ranked 14th in the 165-lb. weight class.
Last season captured the AMC title with 191 points, followed by Missouri Baptist with 155.5 and LU-B placed third with 101.5 points.
