COLUMBIA, Mo. – The ninth-ranked Lyon College women's basketball team played a close battle with rival No. 12 Columbia College Saturday afternoon, falling 68-67 in the American Midwest Conference Game of the Week. The Scots scored the final nine points of the game, but the Cougars still held on for the win at Southwell Complex in an epic conference battle, snapping the Scots five game winning streak. The teams have now split the season series 1-1, after the Scots defeated the Cougars 70-56 at home on Nov. 19.
Kiara Moore (SR/Little Rock, Ark.) (pictured below left) tied her season high of 21 points to lead Lyon, while recording four steals and Sarah Elkins (SO/Greenwood, Ark.) posted 13 points and grabbed four rebounds. Elliot Taylor (SR/Cabot, Ark.) and Ali Tucker (SO/Jonesboro, Ark.) (pictured below right) followed with 11 and 10 points, respectively.
Sarah Walters led the Cougars with 20 points, while Ashlee Marlatt and Raegan Wieser each chipped in 11 points.
Lyon falls to 14-3 overall and 10-2 in the conference. Columbia improves to 17-3 overall and 11-3 in the AMC. The Scots are still in second place despite the loss, while Columbia sits in third place in the AMC. In other AMC action, No. 1 Freed-Hardeman narrowly beat No. 24 Lindenwood University-Belleville 66-60 in overtime to remain atop the conference. Harris-Stowe is tied for fourth place with the Lynx after defeating Williams Baptist 76-45. William Woods defeated Central Baptist 72-57 to move into fifth place in the conference.
BY THE NUMBERS
42.4 – Lyon shot 42.4 percent in the game on 28-of-66 from the field. Moore totaled eight field goals going 8-for-14 overall, while Elkins was 6-for-12. Columbia finished the game shooting 42.9 percent on 21-of-49 from the floor.
10 – The Scots had 10 total three-point field goals in the game, led by five from Moore. Tucker finished second with two, while Elkins, Liz Henderson (FR/Newark, Ark.) and Kelsey Smith (SR/Little Rock, Ark.) each had one.
24 – There was a differential of 24 free throws attempted by both teams in the game. Columbia went 19-of-25 from the charity stripe, while Lyon had just one opportunity at the line – going 1-for-1.
30 – Lyon as a team grabbed 30 rebounds with Taylor leading the way with seven. Elkins finished with four, while Gracen Ratliff (FR/Batesville, Ark.) and Madison Riley (FR/Judsonia, Ark.) had three rebounds.
13 – Lyon was able to force 13 Cougar turnovers in the game, while committing just six overall. The Scots also scored 14 points off the Cougars' turnovers and Columbia scored eight points.
Both teams stayed close throughout the entire first half. Lyon grabbed an early 15-7 lead before Columbia came back to score 13 of the final 15 points in the first quarter, taking a 20-17 lead. The Scots clawed back in the second quarter to take a 33-28 lead at the 3:23 mark after a basket by Elkins. Both teams traded baskets the rest of the quarter as both teams would go into the locker room tied at 36 at the half.
The third quarter was just as close as the first two, as Columbia held a 52-49 lead with 3:02 left in the quarter. Moore then made a three-pointer to tie the game before two made free throws from the Cougars. Tucker would then score a basket to tie the game at 54, before two more made free throws by Columbia. The Scots trailed by just two at 56-54 heading to the fourth quarter.
Lyon would tie the game again, before Columbia made a fast push with 7:28 left. The Cougars eventually took a 10 point lead of 68-58 at the 4:18 mark. The Scots however, were able to battle back down the stretch when Smith, Tucker and Taylor scored nine unanswered points in a two minute span. The last basket of the game was scored with 2:09 remaining, as both teams went scoreless the rest of the way with Columbia pulling out the close win.
WHAT'S AHEAD FOR THE SCOTS
Lyon returns home to James C. Becknell Gymnasium on Thursday with a matchup against Stephens College. Tip-off is set for 5:30 p.m. Lyon will then host Park University on Saturday at 1 p.m.
