HANNIBAL, Mo. – Despite putting a team on the mat which was shorthanded because of illnesses to some of its personnel, the Lyon College men's wrestling team had several athletes step up with outstanding performances, including Roger Gasmann (FR/Little Elm, Texas) recording his first college pin, as the Scots knocked off Hannibal-LaGrange University, 31-16, in the Mabee Sports Complex Tuesday afternoon.
The Scots, who improved to 7-10 on the season in dual action and evened their American Midwest Conference mark at 2-2, received fall victories from Gasmann in the 149-lb. weight class and Troy Mercer (SR/Rockwall, Texas) (pictured at right) in the 197-lb. class, as the Scots only lost one match on the mat during the event.
"I thought our kids stepped up big time today," said Lyon head wrestling coach Tom Erikson after the competition. "We had to leave some kids home due to illness, but others stepped and got the job done.
"A big 'hats off' to Roger for the pin and to Cordell Spohrer (SO/Slidell, La.), who recorded his first win in the heavyweight class."
It only took Gasmann 1:44 to record the pin over Josh Nidever. Mercer won his fall in 1:07 over Drew McCullium.
Lyon's Connor Webber (JR/Houston, Texas) captured a major decision, 16-5, over Josh Culp in the 174-lb. weight class and Spohrer posted a 10-6 decision over Konnor Braughton in heavyweight.
Lyon's Albert Ordonez (FR/Miami, Fla.) lost a major decision, 16-5, in the 157-lb. class to Matt Mattingly.
WHAT'S UP NEXT FOR THE SCOTS?
The Lyon men's wrestling team will head to Marshall, Mo. on Friday and Saturday to take part in the Missouri Valley Invitational. Action begins at 5 p.m. Friday and 9 a.m. on Saturday. That will be the final tune-up before the American Midwest Conference Postseason Tournament on Saturday, Jan.28, at Williams Baptist College.
