BELLEVILLE, Ill. – No. 24 Lindenwood-Belleville trailed by just nine points to the ninth-ranked Lyon College women's basketball team with 3:25 left in the game, but the Scots held on for the 71-60 win over the Lynx on Thursday night. On defense, the Scots forced 22 Lynx turnovers and held LUB to 38.6 percent from the field – including 25.9 percent in the first half. The win for Lyon marked the eighth of the season away from James C. Becknell Gymnasium, and also snapped a four game winning streak for the Lynx.
Lyon had four players score in double-figures led by 18 points by Sarah Elkins (SO/Greenwood, Ark.). Madison Riley (FR/Judsonia, Ark.) (pictured below left) posted 16 points, while Kiara Moore (SR/Little Rock, Ark.) (pictured below right) finished with 15 points and a team high seven rebounds. Liz Henderson (FR/Newark, Ark.) also scored 10 points and had three assists on the night.
Lindenwood-Belleville was led by Brianna Mueller's 14 points, and Alison Webb's double-double of 13 points and 11 rebounds.
Lyon improves to 13-2 overall and 9-1 in the American Midwest Conference. Lindenwood-Belleville falls to 12-5 on the season and 8-3 in conference play. The Scots are still in second place in the AMC, while No. 12 Columbia is in a three way tie for third place with Harris-Stowe and the Lynx as each has an 8-3 conference mark. In other AMC action Columbia defeated Park University Thursday night, 92-75, while No. 1 Freed-Hardeman University defeated St. Louis College of Pharmacy, 88-29 to stay atop the conference. Harris-Stowe also won 73-30 over Central Baptist.
BY THE NUMBERS
41.7 – Lyon shot 41.7 percent from the field on 25-of-60 shooting. Elkins led the team with a 7-for-11 mark and Riley shot 6-for-14 from the floor.
6 – The Scots made six three-pointers in the contest, going 6-for-16 from beyond the arc for 37.5 percent. Moore and Henderson each made two shots from long range, while Riley and Kelsey Smith (SR/Little Rock, Ark.) each made one three-pointer.
10 – Lyon's strong defensive play was large in part to forcing 22 Lindenwood-Belleville turnovers. The Scots forced reigning conference player of the week, Webb to commit 10 mistakes on the night.
32 – The Scots grabbed 32 rebounds in the game as Smith finished second on the team with five. Elliot Taylor (SR/Cabot, Ark.) was next in line with four rebounds, while Elkins had three.
40 – Overall, both teams made a combined 40 free throws in the contest. Lindenwood-Belleville went 25-for-33 at the line, while Lyon was 15-for-24. Elkins went a perfect 4-for-4 to lead the Scots, while Riley and Moore each made three free throws. Henderson and Gracen Ratliff (FR/Batesville, Ark.) followed with two made free throws and Taylor had one.
Lyon came out of the gate hot leading 12-6 just four minutes into the first quarter. The Lynx then climbed back in it to tie the game at 12, but Lyon regained the lead and went on a 15-6 run to take a 27-18 lead after the first quarter. The Scots scored the first six points in the second quarter, while holding LUB scoreless in the first two minutes. Lyon continued to keep the pressure on the Lynx as the Scots would eventually take a 38-25 lead at halftime.
Lindenwood-Belleville tried to put together a comeback in the early portion of the third quarter – trailing 40-31, but Lyon pushed its lead higher after Moore and Riley hit back-to-back three-pointers. The Scots increased their lead to 55-38 after a three-pointer by Smith before the Lynx made a basket to trail 55-40 going into the final period.
The Scots lead grew even further at 62-46 with 5:12 remaining in the game before LUB tried to make one last stand. The Lynx went on a 8-1 run to trail 63-54 with under three and a half minutes left, but Moore and Ratliff helped bring the Scots lead back to double-digits with four straight points. Lindenwood-Belleville was unable to inch any closer as Lyon held on for the win.
WHAT'S AHEAD FOR THE SCOTS
Lyon will continue their road trip next week as the Scots travel to (RV) William Woods on Jan. 19, and No. 12 Columbia on Jan. 21. Tip-off for the game against the Owls is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
