WALNUT RIDGE, Ark. – Lyon College took an early 18-0 lead over No. 9-ranked Missouri Valley College and then clinched the victory with decision victories by Jacob Hill (JR/August, Kan.) and Troy Mercer (SR/Rockwall, Texas) late in the dual to claim a 28-23 victory in competition held at Williams Baptist College on Friday.
Lyon's Christopher Marson (SO/Denham Spring, La.) (125-lb. weight class) and Dustin Miller (JR/Escondido, Calif.) (133-lb.) gave the Scots an early lead when they received forfeit victories. Tevon Sandoz then stretched the Lyon lead to 18-0 when he recorded a fall victory over Jermaine Pryor in just 40 seconds in the 141-lb. weight class.
The Scots' Roger Gasmann (FR/Little Elm, Texas) dropped a 19-2 technical fall setback at the hands of Kenny Boyd in the 149-lb. class and the Vikings picked up a forfeit win in the 157-lb. class to inch to within 18-11.
In the 165-lb. weight class, Lyon's Connor Webber (JR/Houston, Texas) posted a major decision, 15-3, over Alex Destra. Then the Scots gave up a forfeit loss in the 174-lb. weight class as Missouri Valley College pulled to within 22-17.
The Scots then clinched the win in the next two weight classes when Hill grabbed a 5-0 decision over Nicholas Whitehead in the 184-lb. class and Mercer (pictured at right) posted a 7-4 decision over Steven Allen in the 197-lb. class to stretch Lyon's lead to 28-17.
MVC's Justin Smith defeated Lyon's Cordell Spohrer (SO/Slidell, La.) with a fall in 32 seconds in the final match.

The Lyon men's wrestling team will be in Oklahoma City on Monday to finish up the 2016 portion of its schedule at the Oklahoma City University Duals.
