BATESVILLE, Ark. – It was a night of 'sharing the wealth' for the ninth-ranked Lyon College women's basketball team Tuesday. The Scots had five players score at least eight points as they defeated Philander-Smith College (Ark.) 87-45 inside James C. Becknell Gymnasium. Lyon built a 23 point lead at the break, and never looked back before shutting down the Panthers to win their fifth straight contest. Lyon is now 14-3 all-time against Philander-Smith.
Kelsey Smith (SR/Little Rock, Ark.) led the team by matching a career-high 12 points, while Ali Tucker (SO/Jonesboro, Ark.) (pictured below right) finished with nine points. Sarah Elkins (SO/Greenwood, Ark.), Elliot Taylor (SR/Cabot, Ark.), Jamie Jackson (SR/Beebe, Ark.) and Gracen Ratliff (FR/Batesville, Ark.) had eight points apiece to contribute in a well-rounded game for the Scots. The eight points for Ratliff was a career-high, while Liz Henderson (FR/Newark, Ark.) also scored seven points and had a career-high six assists.
Lyon improves to 5-1 overall on the season, while Philander-Smith falls to 6-3 overall. While this was a non-conference game, Lyon remains in a three-way tie for first place in the American Midwest Conference with No. 8 Freed-Hardeman University (Tenn.) and Hannibal-LaGrange University (Mo.).
BY THE NUMBERS
50 – The Scots were aggressive on the boards all night, grabbing 50 for the game. Elkins led the team with a career-high 11 rebounds, while Jackson had seven and Madison Riley (FR/Judsonia, Ark.) chipped in four.
6 – Lyon also played strong defense blocking six total shots – led by four from Taylor. Riley and Elkins rounded out the squad with one apiece. Lyon also held the Panthers to a 27.7 field goal percentage in the game, including a 18.2 mark in the first half.
53.6 – Lyon shot 53.6 percent from the field, including an impressive 59.3 percent in the second half. Elkins and Taylor led the team with four made field goals each, while Tucker, Smith and Samantha French (SO/Marshfield, Mo.) each had three.
24 – The Scots scored 24 points off 16 Panthers turnovers.
21 – Terralyn Dominick and Brittney Rufus combined for 21 of Philander-Smith's 45 points in the game.
Lyon scored the first nine points of the game and eventually built it to a 38-15 lead with 1:47 left in the second quarter. The Scots took a 40-17 lead at halftime, before keeping their foot on the gas pedal in the third quarter. Lyon would outscore the Panthers 28-10 in the third quarter – capped off by a three-point basket from Smith at the buzzer. Lyon led 68-27 heading to the fourth quarter.
Whitney O'Dell (SO/Fort Smith, Ark.) and Robin Stewart (JR/Alma, Ark.) opened the fourth quarter with back-to-back three-point baskets for the Scots. Six points scored by both teams resulted in a 74-33 lead for Lyon with 7:23 remaining. Lyon would go on to score 13 more points in the quarter before taking a decisive 87-45 victory over the Panthers.
WHAT'S AHEAD FOR THE SCOTS
The Scots will travel to Columbia, Mo., to face off against Stephens College on Thursday at 7 p.m. Lyon then travels to Park University on Saturday to take on the Pirates at 1 p.m.
