BATESVILLE, Ark. – A rash of injuries causing the Lyon College men's wrestling team to take four forfeits and push second stringers into other starting positions had the Scots in an uphill battle from the outset Monday night as they dropped their American Midwest Conference dual to Lindenwood University at Belleville (Ill.), 40-6, here in James C. Becknell Gymnasium.
The Scots dropped to 3-5 in dual action this season, falling to 0-1 against AMC competition. The Lynx kept their dual mark perfect on the season at 2-0, and now hold a 1-0 league record. Both teams entered the action Monday night receiving votes in the first regular season NAIA Men's Wrestling Coaches Top 25 Poll.
Lyon was only able to register two victories in the six-match dual, while giving up 24 points on its forfeits. Junior Connor Webber (JR/Houston, Texas) (pictured at left) battled Lindenwood's Almondo Connor for three periods before coming away with a hard-fought 8-5 decision in the 165-lb. weight class. The Scots' other win was by eighth-ranked Jacob Hill (JR/August, Kan.) in the 184-lb. weight class, as the junior posted a 5-0 shutout over Belleville's Jeff Burzinski.
The Scots' Robb Rodriguez (JR/Hollister, Calif.) went up against 13th-ranked Marcelo Sierra of LU-B in the 141-lb. class and it took three periods for Sierra to squeak out a 6-3 decision over the Lyon junior.
Lyon's Troy Mercer (SR/Rockwall, Texas) entered action ranked No. 15 in the 197-lb. weight class. He battled the Lynx's Darius Lewis to the end before falling by decision, 7-5.
Other results by the Scots included freshman Al Ordonez falling by major decision, 12-0, to Ty Ethridge in the 157-lb. weight class and freshman George Scott (FR/Little Rock, Ark.) falling by technical fall to Joe Robinson in the 174-lb. weight class.
WHAT'S UP NEXT FOR THE SCOTS?
The Scots will then take a break for Thanksgiving before traveling to Plainview, Texas, with the Lyon women for dual action against Wayland Baptist University on December 3.
