SHREVEPORT, La. – The ninth-ranked Lyon College women's basketball team got off to a fast start against No. 3 Our Lady of the Lake University (Texas) Saturday afternoon. Lyon came out of the gate and grabbed an easy advantage late in the third quarter, and never looked back against the Saints. Ali Tucker (SO/Jonesboro, Ark.) scored a career-high 23 points as the Scots upset the Saints, 73-58 at The Dock.
Jamie Jackson (SR/Beebe, Ark.) (pictured below left) also scored in double-figures and added a double-double for the Scots with 14 points and 10 rebounds. Liz Henderson (FR/Newark, Ark.) and Elliot Taylor (SR/Cabot, Ark.) (pictured below right) were next in line chipping in eight points apiece.
Lyon improves to 2-1 on the season, while Our Lady of the Lake falls to 1-2 on the year.
BY THE NUMBERS
13 – Lyon had another strong effort from beyond the arc knocking down 13 three-pointers. Tucker hit seven from long distance, while Jackson and Henderson each had two three-pointers.
38.7 – The Scots shot 38.7 percent from the floor in the game against the Saints. Tucker was 7-of-13 from the field to lead the team. Jackson hit 5-of-13 and Taylor went 3-of-6 from the floor.
11 – Lyon outrebounded OLLU 48-37, a difference of 11 boards. Sarah Elkins (SO/Greenwood, Ark.) was second on the team with eight rebounds. Samantha French (SO/Marshfield, Mo.) also contributed with seven rebounds, while adding another six point performance. Henderson had six rebounds for the Scots and Gracen Ratliff (FR/Batesville, Ark.) added five.
30.4 – Our Lady of the Lake was held to 30.4 percent from the three-point line going 7-of-23. Lyon's defense held the Saints in check overall from the floor as well, as OLLU went 22-of-63 for 34.9 percent.
Lyon led 14-12 at the 4:15 mark of the first quarter after OLLU's Kasey Saldana hit a three-pointer. The Scots were able however to then close the quarter out on an 11-2 run to take a 25-16 lead capped off by a three-pointer from Whitney O'Dell (SO/Fort Smith, Ark.) and free throw by Ratliff.
Our Lady of the Lake would try to fight back against the Scots, but playing more fluently Lyon found a way to extend their lead in the second quarter. With a 30-22 lead at the 7:36 mark of period two, Henderson, Jackson and Tucker combined for the next eight points for the Scots. The Saints climbed back trailing 38-33, but a three-pointer from Madison Riley (FR/Judsonia, Ark.) gave the Scots a 41-33 advantage at halftime.
The third quarter is when Lyon was able to start to pull away. The Scots outscored the Saints 16-12 in the quarter and 16-12 in the fourth. Our Lady of the Lake's closest comeback in the second half came with 3:45 remaining in the third at 49-41. However, Lyon finished the game out strong extending their lead to 65-47 with 6:51 left in the game, while OLLU never came within striking distance of the Scots thereafter.
WHAT'S AHEAD FOR THE SCOTS
Lyon will look to return to the friendly confines of James C. Becknell Gymnasium to face two tough American Midwest Conference opponents on Nov. 17 and Nov. 19. The Scots will host William Woods University on Thursday at 5:30, followed by a date with No. 20 Columbia College on Saturday at 12 p.m.
