SHREVEPORT, La. – In a low scoring affair, the ninth-ranked Lyon College women's basketball team trailed 43-37 with just under four and a half minutes left in the game. The Scots were then able to fight back and rally in the end, as Ali Tucker (SO/Jonesboro, Ark.) (pictured below) hit a game-winning three-pointer to break just the second tie of the game at 46. The Scots came out victorious 49-46 over (RV) Louisiana State University-Shreveport Friday night at the LSU-Shreveport Classic. The game was also a rematch from last year's national tournament matchup when the Scots defeated the Pilots, 58-48.
Tucker and Liz Henderson (FR/Newark, Ark.) each led the Scots with 12 points, while Jamie Jackson (SR/Beebe, Ark.) added 11 points. Samantha French (SO/Marshfield, Mo.) added six points off the bench for Lyon.
Lyon improves to 1-1 on the season, while LSU-Shreveport falls to 0-2.
BY THE NUMBERS
36.7 – Lyon bounced back from a 32.0 percent shooting mark in the first half, by posting a 41.7 percentage in the second half to total a 36.7 percent mark from the field for the game.
35 – The Scots grabbed 35 rebounds in the game, led by six from Henderson and five from Sarah Elkins (SO/Greenwood, Ark.) and Gracen Ratliff (FR/Batesville, Ark.).
7 – Lyon added seven three-pointers in the game with Tucker totaling four and Henderson chipping in two. Jackson added the remaining three-point field goal.
2 – The Pilots had two players record double-figures in Quiana Tucker and Johnesha Major. Major led the team with 13 points, while Tucker had 10.
Lyon struggled in the first quarter, getting outscored 12-6 by LSU-Shreveport. Both teams would score 14 points in the second quarter with the Pilots taking a 26-20 lead at halftime.
Lyon would chip away at the deficit in the third quarter as both teams traded baskets. The Pilots held a 34-28 lead with 2:58 remaining in the third quarter, before going on a 6-1 run to take a 40-29 lead heading to the final quarter.
The Scots would step on the gas pedal in the final quarter, as Tucker opened up the scoring with a three-pointer to cut the deficit to eight at 40-32. Later on, Jackson and Tucker would sink two straight three-point field goals to go on a 6-2 run, with the Scots trailing just 43-40 at the 4:04 mark. After a free throw from Ratliff, Tucker sank yet another long ball to give Lyon their first lead of the game with 2:34 left.
Both teams would trade baskets down the stretch and with the game tied at 46, Tucker hit another three-point field goal with just one second left on the clock. The Pilots' Bria Freeland tried to tie the game in the final second, but missed.
WHAT'S AHEAD FOR THE SCOTS
Lyon will continue the weekend in Shreveport, La., as they battle with No. 3 Our Lady of the Lake University (Texas) on Saturday. Tipoff is scheduled for 3 p.m.
