ST. LOUIS, Mo. – A pair of fledgling NAIA football programs who have made huge strides in 2016 will square off at Christian Brothers College High School stadium when Lyon College and Missouri Baptist University attempt to end the season on a positive note with a non-conference encounter on Saturday near St. Louis.
The contest, which kicks off at 1 p.m., will air (audio) on KZLE-FM Radio (93.1) and on the station's website (see below), with "Big Daddy" Randy Alan and Donald Sullivan bringing the live action. The pregame show will get underway at 12:30 p.m. Missouri Baptist will be providing a free video/audio broadcast of the contest (see link below). Free livestats will also be available.

The third-year Missouri Baptist University program hosts the second-year Lyon College team at CBC High School stadium, located just in front of Missouri Baptist University... This is the first-ever meeting between the two programs... Missouri Baptist has won two games in its last three seasons. The Spartans, who are 2-30 in the history of the program, posted a 1-10 record its first year before going winless last season at 0-11. This season MBU (2-8) has recorded wins over Taylor University (43-42) and Lindenwood University-Belleville (14-7) in consecutive weeks in early October... The Spartans are coming off a 58-9 setback to Concordia (Mich.) last week and have lost four straight... Lyon was winless (0-11) last season and won three-of-four in one stretch this season, entering the contest with a 3-7 record. The Scots lost to #25 Langston (Okla.) last week, 40-12, and have lost three straight. The last Lyon victory was on October 8 against Texas College (35-21)… The Scots are looking for their first road win in program history.
BOWLES CLOSING IN ON TEAM RECORD
Lyon is led by its ground game, which ranks sixth in the nation with 2,596 yards. It also ranks eighth in yards rushing per game (259.6)... Michael Bowles (SR/Earle, Ark.) finished third in the nation in rushing last season with 1,431 yards and is within 175 yards of breaking that mark this season. He currently has 1,257 yards (5th in nation) on 195 carries, with eight touchdowns and 6.4 yards per carry... Dwane Robinson (SO/Palm Bay, Fla.) is second on the team with 695 yards and 10 scores, averaging 5.1 per carry... Robinson has completed 51% (93-of-183) of his passes this year for 898 yards, six TDs and six interceptions. He will be looking to be the first Lyon quarterback to throw for over 1,000 yards in a season… Bowles is the leading receiver on the team with 26 catches for 151 yards and a pair of scores. Jonathan Hendrix (SO/Batesville, Ark.) (below, left) is second with 22 grabs for 218 yards and three TDs… Lyon is averaging 379.1 yards per game on offense, with 119.5 yards a game coming through the air.
SIZING UP THE SPARTANS
Missouri Baptist is led by its passing game, which is averaging 256.5 yards per game this season. Five different signal callers are played in 2016. Billy Ritchie is expected to start at QB against the Scots. He has completed 55-of-107 passes (51.4%) for 760 yards, six touchdowns and six interceptions... Kalen Petty is the leading receiver, with 37 catches for 503 yards and a pair of touchdowns. Isaiah King is second with 31 grabs for 835 yards (16th in nation) and nine touchdowns... Antoryio Barton is the leading rusher for the Spartans, with 312 yards on 81 carries and three scores... MBU is averaging just 84.9 yards a game on the ground, while giving up 222.5. The Spartans are allowing 247.1 yards passing a contest.
LEADING THE SCOTS' DEFENSE
Lyon's defense is led by defensive back Cedric Cooney (SO/Lonoke, Ark.), (above, right) who has 34 solo tackles and 63 total. He also has 1.5 tackles for losses, one sack and one interception… DeAngelo Crawford (FR/Jonesboro, Ark.) is second on the team with 61 stops. He has 4.5 tackles for losses of 19 yards… Stephen Benedik (SO/Panama City, Fla.) is third on the team in tackles, with 58. Five of his stops have been for losses. He also has one interception.
WHAT COACH PHELPS SAYS ABOUT THE SPARTANS
"As far as matchups, Missouri Baptist has some similarities to us. Even though they are a year ahead of us, they'll still be playing some freshmen in spots, so it's not like we're going to be playing a team that is going to have a defensive line with nothing but seniors. They won't be as athletic as a Langton or Wayland Baptist or the Arizona Christian teams we've faced this year, but they're going to be very well coached and they will make you play your very best game to beat them."
