HOW THE CSFL RACE IS SHAPING UP
With each team in the conference with 2-3 league games still remaining, the CSFL championship is still very much up for grabs. No. 20-ranked Arizona Christian (5-2, 4-0 CSFL) is currently one-half game ahead of WBU (6-1, 3-0 CSFL) in the conference, with 32nd-ranked Langston University (4-2, 2-1 CSFL) sitting 1.5 games back of the Firestorm and Lyon (3-5, 2-2 CSFL) and Bacone College (2-6, 2-2 CSFL) tied for fourth, two games off the pace… Lyon is still mathematically in the chase for a co-championship and Wayland Baptist can set up a showdown with ACU for the undisputed crown next week if the Pioneers knock off the Scots.
Lyon College and Wayland Baptist University will meet for the second time this season on Saturday… Lyon and WBU played back in the opening week of the season in a non-conference matchup, won by the Pioneers, 37-14, in Batesville. In that game the Scots turned the ball over eight times in the setback, a record for the team… The Scots haven't yet seen the quarterback they'll face Saturday, as Payson Bain was Wayland's starter to open the season before he got hurt the following week, opening the door for Mitchell Parsley. The sophomore has helped Wayland to its best season ever and ranks 17th in the NAIA in passing efficiency (150.5), 18th in total offense per game (271 yards), and 21st in passing yards per game (240)… In the first game Dwayne Robinson completed 16-of-25 passes for 140 yards and an interception for Lyon, while running for 106 yards on 17 carries. Michael Bowles (SR/Earle, Ark.) rushed for 100 yards on 15 attempts. Reace Kinley (FR/Bushnell, Fla.) caught two passes for 56 yards… De'Sean Johnson led the Pioneers' ground game with 75 yards and a touchdown on 18 carries… Despite losing the game, Lyon outgained WBU 368-250 in total yards, including a 228-170 advantage on the ground and 140-80 in the air.
LYON IS LED BY ITS GROUND GAME
The Lyon ground game continues to be not only the best in the CSFL, but one of the best in the nation. The Scots are averaging 288.3 yards per game on the ground, which is more than 48 yards a game more than second-place Langston (239.8). Lyon's average per game also ranks sixth in the nation... The Scots are also ranked sixth in rushing yards (2,306) a game... Michael Bowles continues to be near the top of the nation's rushing leaders, sitting at No. 3 with 1,065 yards. He is fifth in the nation in rushing yards per game (133.1) and eighth in all-purpose yards (1,179)... Dwane Robinson (SO/Palm Bay, Fla.) is the second-leading rusher for Lyon, with 628 yards and ranks third in the CSFL with 104.7 yards per game. Robinson has also completed 69-of-128 passes (54%) for 707 yards, five touchdowns and only three interceptions.
SIZING UP THE PIONEERS
Wayland Baptist quarterback Mitchell Parsley leads the conference in total offense per game, rushing for 212 yards, passing for 1,682, for 1,894 total yards and a 270.6 yards per game average... Jerrell Peterson ranks fifth in the CSFL in rushing yards per game. He has 518 total yards and four touchdowns, averaging 74.0 yards per game... Preston Woodard is tied for third in the conference, pulling in 4.1 passes per game… After the opening win over Lyon, the Pioneers dropped a 48-27 decision to Sul Ross State University, before running off five straight wins, defeating Howard Payne, 40-37, 25th-ranked Webber International, 31-20, Bacone, 26-20, Southwestern Assemblies of God, 24-14, and Texas College, 41-14.
LYON DEFENSE WILL HAVE ITS HANDS FULL
Lyon will have another high-powered offense to slow down. DeAngelo Crawford (FR/Jonesboro, Ark.) leads the Lyon defense with 53 tackles on the year, with four tackles for losses of 16 yards… Cedric Cooney (SO/Lonoke, Ark.) (left photo) is second in tackles with 51, with a team-high 30 solo stops… Sage Wood (SO/West Plains, Mo.), the team's third-leading tackler with 43, is out for the remainder of the season with a forearm injury… Lyon defensive back Stephen Benedik (SO/Panama City, Fla.) has been strong since his return to the lineup. He has 41 tackles on the year, with 22 coming as solos.
WHAT COACH PHELPS SAYS ABOUT THE SECOND MATCHUP WITH THE PIONEERS
"When you turn the ball over eight times, like we did the first time we played them, you're not going to win. That was the first ballgame out of the shoot for us with our new offense. We just put the ball on the ground too many times. They're playing with a different quarterback than they did in that game and their offense has evolved and improved since we played them. They only have one loss on the season, which came on the second week of the season. Hopefully we'll do the things we need to do to get the win."
WHAT'S UP NEXT AFTER THE WAYLAND BAPTIST GAME
Lyon College will close out CSFL play on Saturday, November 5, at Langston (Okla.) University. The final regular season game will be on November 12 in St. Louis against Missouri Baptist University. Both contests will kick off at 2 p.m.
